At Machete Company, we are not big fans of StandUp Surfing, more commonly known as Paddle Surfing, but the following character we are about to tell you about piqued our curiosity.
Angel Salinas, originally from Puerto Escondido, a beach located in the district of San Pedro de Mixtepec belonging to the Mexican state of Oaxaca. He is a hefty whale of a man, weighing 105 kilos (231 lbs) and standing 1.78 meters (5'10") tall, and you can regularly see him decked out in his Mexican wrestling mask during his sessions at the "Mexican Pipeline."
He has earned great respect in the water, not only for his authentic look but for taking on the hollowest and biggest waves of Zicatela, the "Mexican Pipeline." He claims to be the first Mexican to have ridden a tube on his SUP at this well-known beach.
His quiver ranges from 9´6 to 11 feet, depending on the conditions. A smaller board for better maneuvers, the 10.3 is more versatile and, above all, makes paddling easier for him. Finally, the 11-foot board is for serious sizes and gives him greater stability and safety to navigate those giants of his fetish wave, Zicatela.
Of course, he is a big fan of Mexican wrestling, in addition to surfing and international football matches, as well as Japanese food and, clearly, his native Mexican cuisine.
He owns a Surf Shop, Central Surf Shop in Puerto Escondido, and also has his own clothing line including swimsuits, t-shirts, pants, etc. Also, for those interested in taking a trip to the area, they have a series of highly recommended apartments for rent.
